Research. My research attempts to understand mind (i.e., behavior, cognition, and consciousness) from a naturalistic and interdisciplinary perspective. Accordingly, I have published in cognitive science, neuroscience, philosophy, and psychology venues. This work centers on three interrelated areas. The first defends complexity science as an appropriate framework to investigate and explain mind in its various forms and instantiations. The second centers on non-brain-centric forms of mind, such as distributed, embodied, and extended. The third applies the first two to experimental research and involves articulating and applying dynamical analyses and modeling, which I have employed in work on decision-making, neuronal networks, and perception-action experiments.
Teaching and mentoring. My interdisciplinary research outlook also applies to my teaching. I have experience teaching cognitive science, philosophy, and psychology courses, from introductory to graduate levels (for list see CV and Teaching tabs above). I also enjoy mentoring, having coauthored publications and conference papers with mentees, and guiding students through successful applications into neuroscience, philosophy, and psychology graduate programs. My efforts have not gone unnoticed, as I was awarded the university-wide Undergraduate Research Mentor of the Year.
Service. I have served on various editorial boards: Scientific Reports (Editorial Board Psychology), Cognitive Processing (Section Editor Cognitive Psychology), and Cognitive Systems Research (Associate Editor). I was Secretary-Treasurer Elect and Executive Committee member for the Society for Philosophy and Psychology. I am a regular ad hoc reviewer for journal and book manuscripts. I have served my institutions as, among other things, a member of awards and curriculum development committees and hiring committees. I have served students as, among other things, faculty advisor for the Cognitive Sciences Club and faculty mentor for first-generation and underrepresented students.
